Paul Hawken: Keynote at Living Future 08

By: Johnny Hartsfield

Last night at the Living Future Conference here in Vancouver B.C., I listened to Paul Hawken - environmentalist, entrepreneur, journalist and author - give an opening keynote speech inspiring all of us to continue the work we are all doing to respond to our earth’s current health crisis.  Hawken believes that our global society is undergoing a social movement of a magnitude and type that has never been seen in our entire history.  This movement does not have a name nor a leader - many people might call it ”green” - but it is so much bigger than that.

Hawken makes the analogy of this movement to our human immune response system where trillions upon trillions of cells work in concert together within our own bodies to balance our physical being with the influences of our internal and external environments.  Much like white blood cells organize together and adapt to fight off bacteria, so do we as creatures of this earth join in one global fight to protect our home from destruction.

This is a global natural human response of the likes we have never seen before.  It is no wonder why there is no leader and no name - this fight is simply called LIFE and our attention is soley on mother earth - our life, our inspiration and our home.

Hawken urges all of us to continue this “largest movement on earth”, one that has gone largely ignored by politicians and media.  This is a grassroots movement organized from the bottom up which cannot despair.  We must gain inspiration and delight from the collective work we are all doing for humanity to steamroll this unstoppable movement towards a renewed relationship with our environment and one another.

If the words and ideas of Paul Hawken make your heart swell at all, I encourage you all to read more of his work.  Blessed Unrest is just one of the latest publications from one of our nations leading environmentalist’s and social activist’s.

The video below is from the Bioneers Conference and highlights the visions and concepts laid out in the powerful book Blessed Unrest by Paul Hawken.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Living Future Conference.
